Hamilton Girls Soccer Club to raise money for members battling cancer with 4th annual Kickin’ Cancer Tournament

For the last three years, Hamilton Girls Soccer Club’s Kickin’ Cancer tournament has raised nearly $30,000 for cancer research, awareness and treatment.

With the fourth annual 5 v 5 tournament scheduled for June 9-11 in 2017, the soccer club will be helping some of their own this summer.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit six-year-old Paige Stines, who is battling non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Paige played in Hamilton Girls Soccer Club’s Micro Division before undergoing treatment for the disease last summer.

The tournament will also benefit Stacy Corby, who has daughters and nieces playing in the Hamilton Wildcats travel program. Mrs. Corby is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

“Hamilton Girls Soccer Club — our recreation, travel and academy programs — is a family,” said Tom Slater, Hamilton Girls Soccer Club president and a cancer survivor. “And families take care of each other. We are happy that we can offer some financial help to these two families as we join them in their fight against cancer.”

“We began Kickin’ Cancer Tournament in 2014, about a year after I was done receiving treatment for lung cancer,” said Hamilton Girls Soccer Club president Tom Slater. “I wanted to do something to give back and the tournament was a logical step.”

The club has received support from local businesses, including Dicks Sporting Goods, Ewing Sports, Good Stuff Athletic, Brothers Pizza on 33, Geico Insurance, Good Stuff Athletics, Rita’s Water Ice and Key Realty. Professional sports teams such as Sky Blue, Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, the Lakewood Blue Claws and Trenton Thunder have donated door prizes. The Trenton Rebels men’s soccer team have volunteered to be guest referees for the last two years.

The tournament is also honoring three Hamilton Girls Soccer Club parents who died from cancer but naming scholarships in their honor.  Scholarships will be presented to Hamilton travel players who will enter college next year in the names of Ken Dunn, Mitch Rende and Thomas Sprague Jr.

This year’s tournament will include a rec ball component. The entire Hamilton Girls Soccer Club’s spring recreational league — which covers about 200 players from 5-18 — will be playing in the tournament a part of its seasonal schedule.

The tournament also will feature travel and academy teams from New Jersey. Each will play 3 25 minute games.

In addition, there be a coaches/alumni game on June 9, preceding the tournament. Any former Hamilton Wildcat player is eligible to participate in the 6 p.m. game. Cost to play is $25, which includes a donation and a game shirt. Blends on 33 will offer discounted food and beverages following the game to all who come in wearing the game shirt.

At the tournament, there will be tournament t-shirts, food, skill games and a Wall of Honor where individuals can purchase paper ribbons and honor relatives living with cancer or those who passed away from cancer.

Anyone wishing to donate a door prize, become a sponsor or play in the tournament should contact Tom Slater at tslater18@aol.com.
