Hamilton’s CFO John Barrett Dashcam video captures impaired driver’s reckless cruise on 195

On most days Hamilton Township Chief Financial Officer, John Barrett is working to try to save taxpayer money, on Friday, June 29th he was trying to save lives.  Barrett’s dashcam video caught a horrifying scene unfold on his way home from work on Interstate 195.

Barrett’s in-car video camera captured the blue car as it initially started veering out of its lane and then recklessly sideswipe a vehicle, take out a road sign and wipe out in the grass median as the vehicle sped east on the busy highway toward the shore the weekend before a major holiday.

Barrett pursued the driver for nearly 15 miles, from Hamilton Township to the borders of Ocean County while on the phone with 911 operators keeping them informed mile marker by mile marker and documenting as the driver put hundreds of motorists lives in danger reaching speeds of nearly 100mph on his dashcam.

I made sure I maintained a safe distance between him and myself.” explained Barret.

Barrett understood he would be taking a risk but knew it would be worth it if he could save someone’s life.

Barrett likely saved multiple lives on that busy Friday commute home!

NBC New York reported that the driver, 29-year-old Joseph Scott, was taken into custody and faces criminal charges for having heroin and a syringe in the vehicle, as well as multiple driving violations.

Barrett said he hopes the video will remind people ahead of the 4th of July holiday of the dangers of impaired driving.

“They should really think twice, and certainly get an Uber or something or just decide not to drive,” he said.
