June 27: On a night where Broad Street Park was hoping to put some distance between itself and Hopewell, Post 313 played its flattest game of the season.

BSP was out-hit 14-6 as Hopewell took an 8-0 win to pull into a tie for first place in the Mercer County American Legion League.

Broad Street Park (14-2) has suffered both its losses to Hopewell (13-1), which experienced its first defeat to Lawrence two nights ago. There is plenty of time to make up the deficit in the loss column, as BSP has six games remaining, while Hopewell has eight.

BSP had no answer against Tony St. John, who pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks. Broad Street’s best chance came in the sixth inning when it trailed 5-0 and got its first two on base. But the unpredictable craziness of baseball was on full display in that inning.

Steven Meckel led off with a soft hit nubber for a single, and Kyle Harrington hit a high chopper that became an infield hit. Neither ball was hit particularly hard but produced good results for BSP. So what happens? Darius Land rips a ball down the line, and the best hit ball of the inning is gloved by third baseman Nick Psomaras and turned into a rally-killing 5-3 double play.

Harrington had two hits for BSP, which plays Ewing at Moody Park Thursday before visiting Bordentown Friday.

Hamilton-Bordentown suspended

The Hamilton-Bordentown game at Steinert was suspended due to darkness in the top of the eighth, with the game tied 4-4.

Trailing 4-2, Post 31 tied it on a two-out, two-run double by Ryan “Mini Dweller” Beczo in the bottom of the fifth. Bordentown had runners on first and third with two outs in the sixth before Joe Swindasz got a strikeout to keep it tied.
