Nov. 7: Jordan “J-Mo” Morrison made a lot of work for Dan Caruso.
Of course the coach loved watching his junior quarterback rush 30 times for 344 yards and six touchdowns in Steinert’s 49-34 win over West Windsor-Plainsboro North Saturday. But before he could enjoy watching NFL football on Sunday, Caruso was texting and calling and emailing former Steinert coaches to see where Morrison’s statistical day ranked in Steinert history.
What he came up with was the following.
“The six TDs ties a school record from what I am hearing,” Caruso said. “But the 344 is a record.”
It was originally reported that Morrison had over 280 yards but Caruso said on Sunday morning he re-calculated the stats three times, and each time came up with the record-setting 344.
It was an incredible day from a guy who usually plays tailback but is replacing the injured Kyle Gankiewicz (concussion) behind center.
“He was very good all day to say the least,” Caruso said. “But honestly the offensive line had their best game of the season. We got a constant surge all game on the offensive line. Also, the receivers were doing a great job blocking downfield.”
The linemen feature Kyle Young, Matt Olsen, Alex Coleman, Will Games, Gianni Gonzalez and primary back-up Nick Kloutis. The receiving corps includes Conner Braddock, Jordan Goodarz, Angelo Sanger and tight end Tim Brown, who had the only other Spartan TD on a 9-yard run.
Morrison had touchdown runs of 25, 1, 24, 41, 2 and 44 yards in putting his name in the record books.
“He ran very patiently in the game,” Caruso said. “He allowed his blocks to develop. He ran with speed when he needed to and ran tough and physical when we needed the yards. He has done an excellent job filling in for Gankiewicz at QB.”
Defensively, the Spartans had their troubles with WWPN Brian Murphy – as most teams do – who threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns. But Aaron Vancleaf had a big game with nine tackles and a sack while Gonzalez had seven tackles and two sacks.
Steinert (3-5) still has a chance for a .500 season if it can defeat Pinelands Regional in an NJSIAA South Jersey Group III home consolation game Saturday and beat Hamilton West on Thanksgiving.
