Senator Marco Rubio Endorses Ileana Schirmer for Senate in New Jersey’s 14th Legislative District
In what has been an unusually quiet start to campaign season in politically charged Hamilton Township, local Councilwoman Ileana Schirmer’s campaign to unseat 14th District Senator Linda Greenstein just registered on the national political Richter scale.
Schirmer, the first elected Latino Councilwoman in Hamilton Township has gotten the endorsement of the US Senator from Florida and former GOP Candidate for President, Marco Rubio.
What makes this a pretty significant move is U.S. Senators from hundreds of miles away normally don’t even have the slightest clue as to what is going on in statewide legislative races, let alone make a public endorsement and tweet out #TeamSchirmer.
Marc Rubio Put out this statement:
“My friend Ileana Schirmer has my full support in her campaign to take Trenton in a new direction,” said Senator Rubio. “She is an independent-minded leader with a proven track record of fighting for affordability in her community. I know that Ileana will be a fierce advocate for her constituents and will not stop until a serious dent is put in New Jersey’s affordability crisis.”
Both Rubio and Schirmer have Cuban roots. Rubio was born in the U.S. to Cuban immigrants, and Schirmer is a Cuban immigrant.
Schirmer was an early backer of Rubio’s Presidential campaign in 2016.
Schirmer also has the support of the Republican State Leadership Committee, which helps GOP candidates get elected in state legislatures across the country.
The group’s Future Majority Project donated the maximum $8,200 to Schirmer’s campaign last month.
Last week Schirmer’s camp went on the attack against Greenstein, criticizing her vote in favor of the gas tax releasing advertising around that vote including the video below
