Oct. 12: Christie Fink is breathing life back into the Nottingham High girls’ soccer program.

The Northstars took a 5-0 win over improved Trenton on Tuesday.

While a win over Trenton usually doesn’t count as a big deal, this one is a sizable deal, considering the victory puts Nottingham at 5-8 for the season. The Northstars had not won five games since the 2012 team went 6-9-3

It has been an interesting first year with Fink at the helm. The Stars started 2-0 before losing seven straight. But since Oct. 3, they have won three of four and played tough in a loss to a talented Notre Dame side.

“We’ve been playing a lot better,” Fink said. “Our goals are definitely a lot more quality than they’ve been. We’ve been playing a lot calmer and connecting a little better than we were at the beginning of the season, which is nice. They’re getting more used to each other.”

Against Trenton, Kelly Beal and Emily Midura each had two goals, while Isabelle Miranda added one.

“Emily had a great game today, she’s been playing really well for us at center-mid,” Fink said. “Ivonne (Vasquez) is playing well, Kelly Beal, Maddy Diaz. The list just goes on. Lauren Ahern came up from JV a few games ago and has been really stepping up and playing great.”

Heading into the Trenton game, Nottingham was 12th in power points in NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III. A win over Group IV Trenton should help with that as the Northstars chase a state tournament berth.

Spartans win again

One team assured of a state berth and a high seed is Steinert, which improved to 11-1 with a 5-1 victory over Hightstown Tuesday. The Spartans were second in CJ III power points, well behind undefeated Wall.

Aidan Sheehan had two goals for the Spartans, while Emily Gulsby, Ashley Navarro and Giana Pittaro had one each. A good sign for the Spartans is that each goal was assisted, as Brielle Flodmand, Casey Grehan, Michaela Miranda, Cassidy Wood and Chloe Zoldi all set up scores.

Erika Golik and Emily Inman combined for seven saves in the shutout.
