Nov. 12: Kyle Gankiewicz came back and Jordan “J Mo” Morrison kept going.

After missing three games with a concussion, Gankiewicz returned to throw a career-best four touchdown passes in a 35-28 overtime win over Pinelands in a NJSIAA consolation game. Morrison scored four touchdowns, giving him a ridiculous 10 in his last two games.

The two teamed up for the winning TD when Gankiewicz found Morrison with a 25-yard pass on Steinert’s first overtime possession. The defense held during Pinelands’ possession as the Spartans won their second straight and moved to 4-5 with Thanksgiving still remaining.

Coach Dan Caruso moved his “icing” record to 2-0. Much like opening day at Northern Burlington, Caruso called two timeouts to ice the Pinelands kicker as he set up for a game-winning field goal with three seconds left. The strategy worked as he missed a 29-yarder to force overtime.

In a back-and-forth game, Steinert trailed 7-0 before Gankiewicz threw touchdown passes of 38 and 14 yards to Angelo Sanger and Morrison, and Morrison scored on a 65-yard run to make it 21-7 (Jordan Goodarz was 5-for-5 on PATs).

Pinelands tied it with two straight touchdowns before Morrison caught a 12-yard TD pass from Gankiewicz. The visitors tied it one more time with 3:10 remaining, and then missed its opportunity to win it in regulation with the missed field goal.

Morrison has scored 18 touchdowns this season, while Gankiewicz has thrown 11 touchdown passes in six games.
