Apr. 3: The Miracle League of Mercer County, an organization dedicated to providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity to play in an organized baseball league that celebrates their spirit in a non-competitive atmosphere, will start its 12th year of operation on Saturday, Apr. 8 from 10:30 am until 2:30 pm. The event will include food and fellowship and is open to the community.

Established in Mercer County in 2005, the league was first formed via a partnership between the Rotary Club of Robbinsville Hamilton Sunrise and the Hamilton Area YMCA. With a goal of building the first barrier-free baseball field on the east coast, the coalition set out to raise $250,000 for initial construction. The land for the field was donated by the Hamilton Area YMCA from a piece of their Sawmill Branch, and the “field of dreams” welcomed its first players in the fall of 2005.

For over a decade, the Miracle League of Mercer County has served over 200 individuals with disabilities and their families and has garnered the support of over 1,000 community volunteers, more commonly known as “Angels in the Outfield.” This year, the league has seen tremendous growth – and for the first time in history, will feature eight teams.

“It’s absolutely remarkable to see this amount of enthusiasm surrounding our league,” said Executive Director Dan Sczweck. “We have more participants now than we’ve ever had before. The word is getting out. We’re very active on social media – so it is very easy to find us, and have a wonderful partnership with the Trenton Thunder – whom have been amazing at helping us gain even more exposure. And with our growing number of participants, we now are looking to the community for more volunteers, more sponsors, and more donations.”

Four opening games will be played this Saturday at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30 pm. To volunteer, sponsor, or make a donation to the Miracle League of Mercer County, contact Dan Sczweck at (609) 581-9622 ext. 144 or email dsczweck@hamiltonymca.org.
