Oct. 31: Only on Halloween can a high school have one soccer team get treated while the other is tricked.

Or in the Steinert boys’ case, tripped up by a post.

In Central Jersey Group III tournament openers for both teams today, the 2nd-seeded girls rolled to an 8-0 win over 15th-seeded Westampton Tech at home, while the 11th-seeded boys suffered a 1-0 heart-breaker at 6th-seeded Wall.

The Spartan girls will host 7th-seeded Lawrence Thursday at 2 p.m., while the boys finish the season 7-12-1.

Steinert played Wall (10-10) to a scoreless tie through the first half before the Crimson Knights tallied in the second. Battling against the wind, the Spartans continued to attack and threaten, but twice hit the post with shots to suffer a frustrating ending to their season.

The girls had no such difficulty as they put Westampton away by scoring four goals in the first 10 minutes and cruising from there.

Ashley “The Hawk” Navarro, Giana “G” Pittaro, Casey Grehan and Michaela Miranda all scored with over 30 minutes remaining in the half. It was Navarro’s way of celebrating her college choice, as the senior made it official this week that she will run track at Monmouth University.

An own-goal made it 5-0, while Lynzie “Lou” Morgan, Maddie Klein and Jessica Brady also found the back of the net.

Pittaro finished with three assists, while Grehan, Hannah Hart, Jordan Jones, Miranda and Chloe Zoldi had one apiece. Apologies to Zoldi, who was inadvertently left out of the mention of Steinert’s starting defenders in last Thursday’s Mercer County Tournament championship story.

Steinert took a 2-0 win over Lawrence on Oct. 4, getting goals from Miranda and Pittaro. The Spartans are 17-1-2 with a 14-game winning streak and 17-game unbeaten streak, while the Cardinals are 9-8-1.
