Apr. 1: Making his first start for his new team against his old team, Ryan “The Mini-Dweller” Beczo pitched 4.2 scoreless innings to give Steinert’s baseball team a 5-3 win over Hamilton West on Patriots Night at DeMeo Field.
Beczo, who admitted to fighting some early nerves, allowed two hits, four walks and two hit batsmen while striking out three. He got out of a first-and-second, no-out situation with a 6-4-3 double play in the fourth inning, and was removed after allowing two walks with two outs in the fifth. Joe Swindasz and Anthony Wilk finished up, with Wilk retiring all four hitters he faced for the save.
Steinert took a 3-0 lead in the first on Tyler Nielsen’s RBI triple, CJ Pittaro’s RBI groundout and Gio Sciarrotta’s run-scoring single. The Spartans added two in the second when Brady Plunkett (two hits, two runs) tripled and scored on a wild pitch, and Jordan Nitti hit an RBI single.
Hamilton got three back in the sixth on Tyler Springett’s sacrifice fly and Sean Elefant’s two-run double before Wilk came in to slam the door. Nick Diaz pitched outstanding in relief for Hamilton, allowing one run two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
