Nottingham High School will host a Parent/Teen safe driving presentation titled “Share the Keys” on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 from 6:30-8:00, Sponsored by NJM Insurance Company in partnership with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), the research-based course is specifically designed to educate parents of teen drivers about New Jersey’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws and emphasize the importance of parental involvement as teens learn to drive.

Motor Vehicle Crashes remain the leading cause of deaths for teens in the U.S. with an average of 4,000 each year. Parental involvement plays a key role in reducing teen driver crash risks. In fact, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Center for Research Injury and Prevention found that teens whose parents set rules and pay attention to their teen’s driving activities are half as likely to be involved in a crash.

“Keeping our students safe and equipping them with information is of vital importance. Encouraging parental involvement as part of this process is key,” said Frank Ragazzo, Principal, Nottingham High School. “ The issue of teen driver safety is a community –wide concern that impacts so many lives.  We truly appreciate NJM’s commitment to safety and willingness to provide this type of service.”

Developed by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and Kean University, Share the Keys brings parents and teens together, empowering them with resources and tools to cultivate safe driving attitudes and behavior.

Led by trained facilitators, the program is designed for parents and their teens in the pre-permit or permit state of licensure (parents and their teens already holding a probationary license will also benefit).  Key objectives include;

  • Understanding the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws.
  • Being a Good Role Model
  • Effectively Enforcing the GDL at Home
  • Increasing Practice Driving Hours

 The presentation will be held at the Nottingham H.S. Auditorium, located in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.

Members of the media are encouraged to attend. Peter C. Capone, is the school’s contact person and can be reached at (609)647-8783.
